Standout Moments From The Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2017
And it is a wrap for the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2017!
For the third year in a row, a team from Thailand emerged champions of the competition. SCG Muangthong United FC faced a tough fight from a determined Vietnamese side Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN FC in both legs of the final, but eventually showed their strength to win with a convincing aggregate scoreline of 7-1.
This year’s tournament was an illustrious event which introduced two fresh faces from Vietnam and Thailand. Laotian side Lao Toyota FC made a return to the competition after missing out last year, while Cambodia’s Boeung Ket FC are the most experienced team making their third successive appearance.
The Early Favourites
With experience and the country’s star player Chan Vathanaka on their side, Boeung Ket FC were naturally one of the favourites to perform well in the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2017. In contrast, Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN FC were a relatively unknown team at the start, and did not boast a squad of internationally recognised players like their counterparts.
The opening game of the tournament proved how thrilling and unpredictable football can be. Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN FC took to the game from the beginning with vigour and skills that rivalled their more experienced opponent in Boeung Ket FC!
The Surprise Package
The Vietnamese won Round 1 over two legs with a sound aggregate score of 9-5 to secure their spot in the Semi-final against Lao Toyota FC. They then brushed aside their Laotian rivals in a famous 2-0 away win in Vientiane to book a place in the Final against the Thai League Cup 2017 winners, SCG Muangthong United FC.
In spite of their reputation for being one of the region’s football superpowers, SCG Muangthong United FC were well aware of how far the Viets have come and the trouble they can give on the field.
A Clash Of Skill Versus Determination
One of the key features of Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN FC was their dogged determination to fight for every ball and turn every opportunity into a goal. The Thais knew that very well, and were wise to not underestimate their opponents.
SCG Muangthong United FC threatened with their squad of Thai national players in the likes of Adisak Kraisorn, Theerathon Bunmathan, and the highly-rated Teerasil Dangda. But the Vietnamese side had prolific striker Toure Youssouf in their squad, with seven goals under his name.
After an exhilarating two legs of the Final that saw a whopping eight goals being scored, SCG Muangthong United FC came out tops and lifted the championship trophy!
The Key Takeaways
